What is credit?

Credit is neither free nor extra money as most people think! Credit is a form or borrowing money to make immediate purchases with the terms of repaying the full amount with interest. Depending on the various types of credit; credit services can be used to pay on specific services such as utilities or cable. This is considered service credit that becomes due after the billing cycle has ended and the balance for usage is calculated.

However the most common types of credit used today is mortgage or property loans, personal loads, extended lines of credit, credit cards and credit hire purchases to name a few. And while each type of credit yields a specific purpose; here are the most common reasons people use credits instead of cash:

Convenience - Making a purchase using a credit card offers the card holder with the advantage of not having to carry large sums of cash around or handling a check book. Therefore, the hassle free shopping that comes with buying items on credit is as simple as a swipe of the card and your signature. Now with online and telephone purchases the transaction is effortless when buying or ordering from a catalog.

Emergency - Using your credit card like a financial blanket can get you out of most any immediate and emergency situation. Especially when you’re between pay periods and money is short.

Budgeting - It’s a lot easier to arrange pay off schedules for purchases made with credit. Credit also offers you the opportunity for discounts and special offers when used wisely.

Protection - when using credit there’s truly no need to carry cash, hence credit protects from the loss of cash. Plus it’s accepted anywhere. Take for example; if you lose $100 in cash someone who found it could use it anywhere they want. However if you los a credit card with $300 credit limit, the finder couldn’t use it and if so you wouldn't be accountable for the repayment. That’s if, of course, you report the card lost or stolen in a timely fashion. Even if you don’t report the card stolen before it’s used, you’ll only be charged $50.

Travel - Most people with credit cards find it quite easy to make pertinent purchases while traveling. For example, air plane tickets, car rentals, reserving and paying for hotel stays and more. Also, one of the benefits of traveling with credit is the fact that all your purchases are guaranteed for quality and functionality plus you can return items and request refunds where this may be difficult for cash purchases abroad.

For as many reasons as credit is good to have it is equally as important for people to have a good credit history as well. The impact specific financial decisions can make on your personal or business credit is huge. Plus banks as well as other credit lenders will review your credit history to determine their risk and your ability to repay the loans. In many cases, this is the deciding factor of being approved or denied credit. Now because landlords as well as employers are considering your credit history is the biggest reason above all to keep a good credit history.
